Old School Wax: 1991 Pro Set Platinum

1991 was a great year for football cards, if you're chasing HOF rookies...Warren Moon, Hermann Moore, Brett Favre and Thurman Thomas headlined the draft class. The Topps, Score, and Upper Deck sets all look pretty nice. But Pro Set Platinum? Let's see what we've got here:

This is one of the most confusing products I've ever opened. Pro Set obviously positioned this as premium product,  but it is lacking much visual appeal.

The best thing about these cards might be the cool looking pack. I would still be drawn to this shiny silver foil today.

Beyond the packaging, the cards are highly forgettable. The cards don't have a player name on the front which is tough for me sin e I can'trecognize a lot of today's players by sight much less players from 30 years ago. Pro Set was obviously trying to highlight the photography here, but the photography and its presentation are somewhat suspect.

I am actually pretty pleased to pull a Joe Montana here, and a Clay Matthews for the PC.

These photos aren't too bad...we do have a Joe Montana classic action shot, but if we look at this card, we see a different story:

I guess this card is for #55, but he's more than a little off-center. Maybe the photog should have moved half a step to the right? I know that these folks were working with film, so the margin for error was much smaller, but still...maybe if they had been presented in full gloss or something they would look better. Even the Upper Deck set wasn't particularly glossy or fancy, but just a better printed product with crisper photos and  more visual appeal.

The iconic Topps Stadium Club would come out in 1991, essentially doing what this set hoped to do, and changing cards forever in the process. This set just looks kind of tired overall, even for the early 1990s.
