Wednesday Wax: 2019 Panini Contenders Football (on a Thursday)

Ah, Contenders. The Contenders ticket theme is well known and loved (?), or at least easily recognized, by collectors of all sports, everywhere. Despite the low price tag($9 for 22 cards from my LCS), this generally isn't a bad set. In the base set there are 299 players, with plenty of inserts and parallels the base cards are fairly glossy and nice on-hand feeling, and the quantity is satisfying to a beginning or entry-level product collector.

Onto the cards:
One nice thing about a set of this size is that you're probably going to get a variety players, but also have a reasonable shot at pulling a couple of your PC players. Out of the 22 that came in the pack, these six were the best to me. Three Season Ticket base cards, a Baker Mayfield MVP Contender base and a Patrick Mahomes MVP Contender green parallel.

The base cards were nice to add to my PC, but the look of the MVP Contenders cards just didn't really tickle my fancy much. One silver lining is that I was able to get a few bucks for the Mahomes a cover half of the cost of the pack.

Have to say that even with some of these lower end products, collecting is much more fun than it used to be. When I started collecting cards,.packs were only $.50, and you got 20 cards, but it was very common to open a pack and not recognize anyone you pulled. Sets of baseball were well over 700 cards, and there were hundreds of thousands of each card printed, so the stars or even  just favorite players were so diluted that it was a challenge to pull anyone exciting.

In today's world, even with this low-end product, you can pull some solid stuff from every pack.
